It was played by two teams of one to eight players who competed on either side of a central line that was clearly marked by stone discs (set in the playing alley) or by sculptures or rings set in the vertical sides of the bordering platforms.


The name "Chichen Itza" literally means at the edge of the Itza's well. The Itza's were an ethnic group that were settled in Yucatan before the Spanish conquest.

The Maya's developed the only writing system of all the civilizations of America prior to the conquest.

A visitor is not allowed to climb the stairs of the Castillo anymore in order to better preserve the monument.
